Alley Plays transforms the uninviting alley into an alcove of delight and play, questioning the potential and abundance of public spaces. Spaces that are already built into the fabric of our cities. The forced new norms of the pandemic showed us that we don’t have to be so dogmatic about how we live, that includes how we use our cities now and in our future within the horizon.
As the pandemic has forced new norms on everyone, it has placed greater emphasis on the home and less so the office. Shifting the daily routines through common public spaces to get to and from work towards routines that were confined to the home. The pandemic has allowed us to question how these new norms can shape our perceptions of left over spaces within our city.
Located at the alleyway between State St. and Madison in Chicago, Alley Plays alters its perception of junky space into a playful urban jungle through the form of curious and personable poles that reach, shake, and hug those looking to escape the hectic nature of their homes and the city.
